CHARLOTTE BUSINESS | UPTOWN DEVELOPMENT

Another major company is planting roots in Uptown Charlotte — and this one says a lot about where the city is headed.

American Express is officially expanding to Charlotte and plans to occupy several floors at Legacy Union 6Hundred on South Tryon Street by the end of this year.

This isn’t just a new office lease. It’s a signal.

What’s Happening

AmEx will move into Legacy Union 6Hundred, a 24-story tower in Uptown that is already approximately 84% occupied. The building is part of the larger Legacy Union development, which continues to reshape the South Tryon corridor and strengthen Uptown’s business core.

Hiring is already underway.

Over the next several years, American Express expects to bring a few hundred employees to Charlotte, with senior-level and hybrid roles currently posted.

Why Charlotte?

According to company leadership, Charlotte stood out because of its:

  • Highly skilled talent pool
  • Strength in financial services
  • Risk and compliance expertise
  • Growing presence in financial technology

This aligns perfectly with what Charlotte has quietly become — one of the strongest financial and fintech hubs in the country.

The Bigger Trend

This move fits into a broader pattern.

Companies across the U.S. and overseas continue choosing Charlotte for expansion, including:

  • Volkswagen’s Scout Motors
  • Daimler Truck North America
  • Major banking and financial institutions

Charlotte isn’t winning one-off announcements. It’s building momentum.

Why This Is a Big Deal

When companies like American Express expand into Uptown, it creates ripple effects:

  • High-quality job growth
  • Long-term economic stability
  • Increased housing demand
  • More retail and infrastructure investment

These moves don’t just impact office space — they shape residential markets across the metro.

Charlotte keeps climbing.

And understanding announcements like this matters — because they’re not just headlines. They’re signals of what’s coming next.
