Development | East Charlotte

East Charlotte just had a moment — and honestly, it’s been a long time coming.

After years of being overlooked while the rest of the city surged ahead, this part of Charlotte is finally seeing real, meaningful investment — and it’s starting in a big way.

A Long-Awaited Transformation Begins

Earlier this month, the City of Charlotte officially broke ground on the Eastland Sports Campus — a major redevelopment on the former Eastland Mall site.

This isn’t a small project:

  • 29-acre site
  • $67 million total investment
  • 100,000 sq ft indoor sports facility
  • Space for 10 full basketball courts
  • 6 outdoor multi-use soccer fields
  • $30 million funded by the city

The outdoor fields are expected to open first — roughly 8 months into construction — while the full campus is targeting completion in 2028.

For a site that sat vacant for years, this is a massive shift.

More Than Just a Sports Complex

What makes this project stand out isn’t just the size — it’s the intention behind it.

The development team has made it clear: this space is meant to be accessible to the community.

That means:

  • Free or low-cost access for residents
  • Programming designed for local families
  • A facility that serves the people who actually live nearby

That’s not always the case with projects of this scale — and it’s a big reason this one matters.

Zooming Out: The Eastland Yards Vision

The sports campus is just one piece of a much larger redevelopment: Eastland Yards.

This is an 80-acre public-private project that’s already gaining traction:

  • Apartments leasing now:
    • $1,400–$2,800/month
  • Homes by Saussy Burbank:
    • From the low $490s to mid $500s
  • Retail and commercial space on the way
  • A 4.5-acre county park under construction
  • Affordable senior housing already fully occupied

This isn’t just one development — it’s a full repositioning of the entire area.

Why This Matters for Charlotte

For years, East Charlotte has been one of the most underinvested areas in the city.

What’s happening at Eastland signals a real change:

  • Public and private investment finally aligning
  • Infrastructure and amenities catching up
  • A new growth corridor emerging outside the typical hotspots

If you’re watching where Charlotte is headed next — this is one of the most important places to pay attention to.
