It's almost game day, and we've got some serious hometown pride to share with our Charlotte community!

We talked about this on our latest Realize episode! Check it out by clicking here!

Are you ready for Super Bowl LX? If you're a Tar Heel fan in Charlotte, this year's game is extra special. With the New England Patriots facing off against the Seattle Seahawks, we've got FOUR former UNC players between both rosters. That means no matter who takes home the Lombardi Trophy, a Carolina alum is getting a ring. How cool is that?

Drake Maye Makes History

Let's start with the name everyone in Charlotte knows - Drake Maye. Our Patriots quarterback is making history as the first former UNC quarterback to ever reach the Super Bowl. For a program with Carolina's football legacy, that's a pretty incredible milestone, and we couldn't be prouder to see him representing the Tar Heels on the biggest stage in sports.

More Tar Heels in New England

But Maye isn't the only UNC product suiting up for the Patriots. Here's who else is repping Carolina in New England:

Mack Hollins (Wide Receiver) - Talk about a journey! Hollins walked on at Carolina in 2012 and left as one of the top receivers in program history. This is his second Super Bowl appearance - he already has a ring from the 2018 Eagles. But here's the difference: he's not just playing special teams this time. He's starting at wide receiver.

Amari Gainer (Linebacker, Practice Squad) - Gainer spent the 2023 season at UNC after five years at Florida State. While he likely won't see playing time in the Super Bowl, he'll still get to hoist the Lombardi Trophy if the Patriots win.

Seattle's Tar Heel Connection

On the other sideline, the Seahawks have linebacker Chazz Surratt - and his college career is one for the books. Ready for this?

• Started as UNC's quarterback (2016-2018)

• Switched to linebacker and became a two-time All-ACC player

• Now a key special teams contributor for Seattle

Surratt's been on injured reserve with an ankle injury since late November, but he's been a full participant in practice leading up to the big game. Will he suit up? We'll have to wait and see, but either way, he's part of this historic Tar Heel moment.

A Carolina Connection Worth Celebrating

This is the first time since 2016 that both Super Bowl teams have featured UNC alumni. Remember that game? The Denver Broncos (featuring Sylvester Williams) beat our own Carolina Panthers (with Tre Boston on the roster). So this matchup feels especially meaningful for our local community.

Here in Charlotte, we're connected to UNC in so many ways - whether you're an alum, a fan, or just someone who appreciates the Tar Heels' impact on our region. Seeing multiple Carolina products competing at the highest level of professional football is something we can all take pride in.

Game Day is Almost Here

Whether you're rooting for the Patriots or the Seahawks, at least one former Tar Heel will be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy when it's all said and done. And for those of us here in the Charlotte area, that's definitely something worth celebrating.

So as you're planning your Super Bowl party and deciding which team to cheer for, remember that you've got a hometown connection no matter what happens.

🏈 Who are you pulling for - Team Maye or Team Surratt?
